This week we chat with Portrait and Fine Art Photographer Belinda Thompson

How long have you been creating?

I have always enjoyed photography and always taking photos of friends and family, but I would say I started to take a special interest in fine art photography and portrait photography about 3 years ago. I did photography back in college many years ago. After many years of working in child care and bringing up my own children I found the time for myself to express me and what I enjoy .

What makes you and your creations unique?

This is a hard question to answer……..I guess im unique because I have a passionate eye for the world around me , and I like to capture it on digital film naturally without changing to much of the image…. everywhere you look people have cameras in their hands so its very hard to be unique in this field…… I try to capture the most natural image of the world around us . Although I took photography years back I would say im more a self taught photographer.

What is your biggest creative goal for the moment?

My biggest creative goal so far would have to be owning and running my own gallery /studio where I was able to exhibit my photography work . From this I have sold pieces and have completed photo shoots for portraits and weddings. Starting to make some money from what I love to do .

What has been your greatest creative achievement to date?

My latest and greatest creative achievement would be the last wedding I did…..the photos were very creative and everyone was very please with my work. I had the whole day planned and then it rained so I had to change the whole day of wedding photos which was very challenging.

Do you have any creative developments/big news that you would like to share?

My new web page

Available for pregnancy , portraits, weddings , newborns , children and special family times.

Have you ever had an embarrassing moment or complete disaster with any of your creative works?

When /how did you decide to pursue your creativity as a business?

I opened and ran a gallery/studio in my local rural town of Corowa . Studio 51 was opened for local and surrounding artist to exhibit their art works, photography , handmade jewellery , unique gifts and sculptures . I also registered my photography business “images by belinda “about 12 months ago. Where I was producing fine art photography , portraits and weddings. I believe I decided to pursue my creativity as a business after being inspired by a friend and local artist , who has been very supportive and very inspirational.

How do you produce an income from your creative work?

Producing an income from my photography is a time consuming thing , lots of hard work and lots of money spent to achieve an income from my creativity. I entered art shows and had exhibitions where I sold some pieces of my photography , also through my studio 51 . I have also made an income through portrait shoots and weddings which I enjoy doing and with word of mouth they are increasing.

What are the best things about having a creative small business for you?

I found the best things about having a small business was giving myself a space to be creative and to explore my field of photography. Also to share this experience with other artists through the studio/gallery and communicating and meeting so many amazing and talented people.

Is there a downside?

Unfortunately for myself the downside of running a studio/gallery and photography business along with a family , I found I was missing out on time to follow my photography shoots and look for new exciting images to work with. Although one day in the future I would look forward to reopening my studio/gallery .

What is a typical “work” day like for you? What you do for the day, are you very organised or do you just go with the flow?

I always tried to be organised and had a set plan of goals to follow through but as most people know days change and things happen , so I guess I started my day organised and then let it go with the flow .

What motivational advice can you give to other small creative business owners like yourself?

Follow your dreams , never give up . Sometimes our plans change or take different paths but always remember your goals and dreams. We are all very talented people so lets share it with others……..
